Pennywise Brooklyn Concert reviews
Peter Gabriel is a must-see
I was surprised Pennywise had an opening at all. The first two sets and the encore pretty much covered his hits that are not on the So album, the showpiece of the evening. Some of the other songs, however, seemed a bit rough. Known for his stage theatrics, this show did not disappoint. I suspect he likes a specific format for his concert (based on the Growing Up Live DVD I've seen): an acoustic set, followed by a low-keyed set with the whole band, finished with a long totally rock-out set. The major hits were great, well-rehearsed and well-performed. I never expected to see Pennywise live so I jumped on this opportunity while in Colorado. I'm sure when Pennywise wrote and recorded the songs he didn't give a lot of thought to how they would be performed live. The opening act, his two back-up singers were OK. An OK sound...but not the same. Five lighting systems on booms and dollies moved around the perimeter of the stage creating a ballet of sorts. Although I feel his Growing Up Live European tour would have been the one to see, I'm more than satisfied and, yes, I would go back to see him again. A center stage camera pointing down from above was used frequently and thanks to the jumbo screen, the effect was not lost on the audience.
